Download "Hitachi Drive Fitness Utility" or "HD Tune" (Google it) and see if your Hitachi 1.8" Drive has any cache or not.

Seems like I don't.

Hi,
WOW that's a huge disappointment. Without the drive cache the hard drive will be slower than regular 2.5" drives that have 16MB caches.

Yes, apparently a lot of X41T users have found that their 1.8" HDD has no cache (according to those two HD testing programs)

We're not sure if that's how its supposed to be.
So we're gonna complain to Lenovo and/or Hitachi aren't we? Very Happy

In the mean time, I'm looking for a new 60GB one

Do all the drives have this problem? Or just a certain capacity?

Well, this is 4 years late but I have the same HHD, I guess, in my Thinkpad X41 tablet.
It has the same # - HTC426040G9AT00. I think it's an Hitachi Travelstar® C4K60 series; 4200 rpm, supposedly w/ a 2 MB buffer.

I've been trying to troubleshoot why my X41 is slower than my old Zenith laptop running Windows for Workgroups 3.1 off and on for years.

I looked at the Hitachi disk utility, but you have to make a bootable floppy & the thinkpad tablet doesn't have a floppy or CD drive. It might be possible to make a bootable USB Key w/ the utility, but I don't think the BIOS supports USB boots. The BIOS was updated so I"ll have to check again.
