HI.
net via USB cable
First post here.

I am trying to get my Toshiba Satellite Laptop to go onto the internet via USB cabl as my modem has only 1 Ethernet and that is for my Xbox 360 and Live. When I connect the USB to my laptop it recognises it but dosent let me go onto the internet. Help would be appreciated. Is there anything I can do in settings to get my laptop working with USB internet?

Thanks in advance.

Sorta sounds like your Modem is using DHCP to assign an IP Address to the XBOX..... and only the XBOX.

A simple diagnosis would be to disconnect the XBOX from the cable modem, power off the modem (10 seconds), then turn it back on and connect your tablet computer to it (via USB cable). If it connects, your modem can only assign 1 IP Address at a time to either of the connected ports.

Another avenue you can take, if this is the case (as mentioned above), would be to purchase a router to interface between the xbox and tablet. Most routers have 4 Hard Wired Ethernet Ports & 1 WAN connection (the port used to interface to the cable modem). The router would then assign local IP Addresses to the devices on your network (xbox & tablet pc). The single IP Address being issued from the cable modem is used as a gateway through the router.....

If you're set on using USB as the primary connection method for the tablet pc, you'll have to do some research onto what routers (if any), have a usb based connection. Most modern computers have integrated Wireless Connectivity options and this would be the easiest, most efficient method to connect to a router.

I hope this didn't confuse you Razz

Yea most likely you will need a router, I think only fairly expensive and advanced modems (if any) can assign multiple IP addresses. Make sure if you choose to get a router that it is a ROUTER. Switches normally work in households for what you are trying to do- however switches will not assign multiple mac addresses and the Xbox will not run off the switch.

You'll need something like this. That one has some bad reviews but honestly I'd personally never worry when buying a linksys product- they have been far better than any other manufacturer for network stuff that I have tried. They do make some cheaper ones if you are real cash strapped, but generally network things are not the best places to skimp.

What are you playing?

Hi,
You definitely need a router so you can have more than the XBox plugged in. Usually the DSL routers do not allow you to use the USB and Ethernet at the same time. So a router will also give you other features such as wireless (802.11g)
