I'm considering buying the Compaq tablet by itself-- no docking station w/optical multibay drive bundled. Does anyone know if I must use the Compaq multibay optical drive to boot the tablet (say if I need to do an OS re-install) rather than a 3rd party USB CD ROM drive?

I bought a 3rd party CD burner over Christmas and tried to use it with my QuickRestore CDs, but they wouldn't boot. My system was booting fine without the CDs but had a few problems that I have since fixed without resoritng to the CDs. I then tried to burn new CDs with a modified boot image. It seems that the only DOS USB driver is DUSE, which is included in the QuickRestore boot but is disabled for CDs: it's only used to recognize floppies. That can be changed if you're willing to modify the boot image and burn a different CD that you would use in place of your first Quickrestore CD, so long as your CD drive is compatible with DUSE.
