Jim Hillibish: No need for an Apple iPad? Buy it now anyway
Here’s the shocker. The first tablet PC was introduced by Microsoft in 2001. OK, it was pen-based, but it was the start. It floundered because nobody understood its purpose, which remains gray-area.
They renamed it a “slate,” but in the PC world, we want our keyboards. That’s the genius of the convertible, a laptop computer with a screen that detaches and becomes a tablet.
Apple’s OK with credit for inventing the form factor. They did the same thing with other technology. The mouse, the personal computer, the iPod and the iPhone come to mind. Apple doesn’t invent, it clones, redesigns, adds sleekness (“Apple panache”) and calls in the marketing department, then the Brinks truck. (Source: Jim Hillibish, CantonRep.com)
